Uterine Fibroids – Non Surgical Treatment

What are Uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. They are a common condition in women, especially those who are in their 30s and 40s.

What are the symptoms?

Although not all fibroids cause symptoms, some women experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure on the bladder or rectum. In severe cases, fibroids can lead to anemia, infertility, and complications during pregnancy.

How are they treated?

Surgery : Traditionally, fibroids have been treated through surgical procedures like myomectomy ( Removal of fibroid ) or hysterectomy ( Complete removal of Uterus )

Non Surgical – Minimally invasive treatment : Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE)

Uterine fibroid embolisation is a minimally invasive procedure that involves blocking the blood vessels that supply the fibroids. Tiny particles are injected through the catheter to block the blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and die off over time.

What are the Benefits of UFE?

– Minimally invasive procedure done under local anaesthesia, does not require general anesthesia or major surgery.
– Less pain, less scarring, and a shorter recovery time compared to surgical methods
– UFE preserves the uterus, making it a good option for women who wish to have children in the future.
– Lower risk of complications like infection and bleeding than traditional surgical procedures.

What are the Risks of UFE?

– The most common side effects include pain, cramping, and nausea.
– In some cases, the fibroids may not shrink as much as expected, or they may grow back over time.
– Small risk of infection, bleeding, or damage to surrounding organs.

Uterine fibroid embolisation is a minimally invasive procedure that preserves the uterus and carries a lower risk of complications, and is a safe and effective alternative to traditional surgical procedures for the treatment of fibroids.
