Fact – Symptomatic varicose veins can be managed either conservatively or cured with endovenous ablation, surgery is not an emergency.

Myth – Varicose veins have a very high rate of recurrence post surgery
Fact – In the hands of experienced doctors, Varicose veins have only 3% recurrence post surgery. The recurrence in the symptoms might be due to multiple factors, perforator incompetence, deep venous disease which was not recognised earlier, sedentary lifestyle & increased weight which can be managed conservatively.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are prominent or enlarged, tortuous veins seen in lower limbs which can cause disfigurement or disability. These veins contain valves which help in carrying blood from the limbs towards heart unidirectionally. The main pathophysiology is due to dysfunction of these valves, causing increased pressure in the veins lower down.

Symptoms?

When symptomatic they can cause heaviness or tiredness towards end of the day, cramps, swelling, bleeding from varices, skin discoloration or ulceration in advanced cases.
